The essay shows how the ebb and flow of teaching depend not only on the quality of an important relationship but also on both the teacher's and the student's understanding of the subject matter. The essay is followed and complemented by a novella, in which Laura, an experienced teacher, shares her thoughts with an inexperienced colleague, Paul. As they explore issues of technique and philosophy, their conversations about teaching are mirrored by their developing interest in each other, creating a subtle counterpoint to the weighty and genuine philosophical concerns. The story turns in on itself when Paul and Laura talk about the function of fiction as opposed to the function of research.
