A delightful tale of two sisters, left penniless on the death of their feckless artist father, with no inheritance apart from their looks. Two quite different families offer help: one surviving just above subsistence level take quiet Lucy, the other , with more money and servants than they can count, takes in the romantic and lively Ayala, but her presence attracts the unwanted attentions of the family’s son, Tom Tringle. Trollope produces a real surprise at this point: incredibly, the two sisters are exchanged like unsuitable shoes. It takes girls of some spirit to survive such treatment, but the author guides them through to a fitting conclusion, full of splendid irony. This is a late work reminiscent, oddly enough, of Jane Austen.
