The Prime Minister

Here Trollope set out deliberately to show us the professional statesman, Plantaganet Palliser, who ‘should have an inextinguishable, inexhaustible love of this country as the ruling principle of his life, and it should so rule him that all other things should be made to give way to it’.

Publication 1994

The Prime Minister has unusually for Trollope, a slightly wooden heroine in Emily Wharton, who is swept off her feet by the dishonest share-pusher Ferdinand Lopez. He succeeds in being selected as a candidate or the Pallisers’ pocket borough, and involves the Prime Minister in an unfortunate payment to protect his wife’s reputation. This comes to light through the efforts of the odious journalist Quintus Slide, and the affair has to be put the rest but a graceful speech in the House from Phineas Finn. Lopez, meanwhile, meets a suitably bleak end.
