The Life of Cicero Volume 2

Trollope in some ways regretted his poor academic record. The Life of Cicero, published in December 1880, can be seen as an attempt to remake himself as a classicist; the author himself called it an ‘opus magnum’ for his old age. His intention here is to reclaim Cicero’s reputation, which he felt had always suffered from the opinions of contemporary historians: he thought that they were too inclined to praise Caesar, leaving Cicero languishing in his shadow. Trollope wrote that ‘my book has sprung from love of the man, and from a heartfelt admiration of his virtues and his conduct as well as his gifts’. He traces his career as student, lawyer, soldier and politician, as well as his private life, and he does so in a narrative that is warm and witty. But Trollope remains throughout coolly objective, and – as he so often did in his novels – debates the eternal question of how a public figure can shape a course of action when the decisions are not easy, and right and wrong are not immediately apparent. This view of Cicero, somewhat unorthodox and unpopular at the time, has increasingly gained currency to become the accepted line. R H Super called the book the author’s ‘genuine masterpiece’.
